WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA – Prognition Corp., the makers of Mavenlive exercise prescription software, are enhancing their product to make billing and coding tasks easier.
This involves allowing users to record the treatment given to their patients, and the exercise software then will analyze this data and generate the appropriate billing codes required by billing software to submit the physical therapists’ claims for reimbursement, says Chris Metcalfe, Mavenlive’s vice president of technical development.The current process that is generally used is for the therapist to record the therapy that was given to the patient and the number of units of the therapy that was performed, Metcalfe says. Examples of this would be: manual therapy x 2 units of 10 minutes; ultrasound, 1 unit for 15 minutes; or exercise prescription, 1 unit.
“The therapist typically records these types of rehabilitation exercises records on paper and passes it along to the administrative staff,” Metcalfe says.
The administrator then has to interpret the therapy and quantity recorded before coming up with the billing codes for this therapy. At that point, the administrator typically enters those codes into the billing software- or onto paper forms if the practice hasn’t gone electronic. From there, the clinic can submit their claims to be reimbursed.
“What Mavenlive rehab exercise software will do is interpret the therapy that has been recorded and come up with the appropriate billing codes automatically,” says Dr. Jay Winburn, Mavenlive’s president. “Once we have those codes, we will send them via HL7 messages to the billing software packages that we’ve integrated with.”
Users of the physical therapy point and click assessment software benefit in a couple of ways, Metcalfe says. Having this ability removes the need for the therapists to record on paper what they have prescribed because all of their documentation can be done in Mavenlive by point and click. Secondly, it saves the administrative staff from having to interpret what codes should be billed based on the therapies that were prescribed, as well as eliminating the need for manually entering these codes for each claim.
Mavenlive simply instructs the billing software automatically which billing codes apply to each patient visit, he says, adding, “This will be a big time saver for both the therapist and the administrator for each patient visit.”
